Site Prospecting

WINData has focused on wind energy site prospecting throughout the US for over 22 years.  WINData provides site prospecting services and creates value by conducting detailed site identification and resource analysis, securing development rights and demonstrating project viability.

WINData’s wind site prospecting personnel have long term expertise in desktop level studies,  site topographical explorations and met program design of prospective windy real estate parcels. WINData provides project management for installation of met towers and instrumentation of a prospect site.

As part of the prospecting process, WINData experts explore the complexities or hidden attributes of the site to determine early critical path issues. WINData works with local entities, future power off-takers, and development entities from the outset to streamline the development process and build appropriate levels of awareness about a site’s potential.

Once site prospect is leased, met towers are installed and data is flowing into WINData’s servers, we continuously monitor and analyze data as a precursor to a full site assessment study which usually occurs after a year or more of data is collected.

Products – Met Towers and Sensors

 Meteorological “Met” Towers

Possibly the most crucial step in the development of a potential wind site is the collection of accurate and verifiable wind data. WINData professional services comprise meteorological (“met”) tower design, installation and data integration to support end user requirements and forecasting data services.

WINData met towers and WINData professional installation services insure collection of “bankable” on-site wind data at hub heights up to 110 meters. Each met tower system installation is planned, specified and supervised by company engineers in conjunction with our clients’ in-house specialists. On-going support is available throughout the entire data collection period.

WINData sells and installs tilt-up, guyed lattice and SSV met towers to suit each customer specification – met towers up to 100 meters are available for either permanent or temporary installation.

WINData’s “WINDataNOW! SuperDuty® data collection towers” are available for sale, delivery and installation throughout continental North America. WINDataNOW!® towers are manufactured using high strength galvanized steel and are available in heights up to 60-meters.

WINDataNOW! SuperDuty® data collection towers are available for sale and installation throughout continental North America. WINDataNOW!® towers are manufactured using high strength galvanized steel and are available in heights of 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60-meters.

WINData® installs NRG NOW systems in 50M, 60M and 80M heights and offers Second Wind towers systems and instruments.

WINData® is a registered reseller, distributor and installer of Mega80 (formerly AAT – Groupe Ohmega) 60M, 67M and 80M Met Towers.

For Hub-height measurement WINData installs Sabre and Rohn guyed lattice towers and Self supporting SSV towers for heights of 65 to 110 meters (350 feet).

Wind and Climatological Sensors

Sensors are installed to measure wind speed, direction, temperature and barometric pressure at designated heights. Clients’ choice of industry standard sensors are available for purchase and installation.

 Data Loggers

Industry standard loggers available for met tower installations from WINDataNOW!®, NRG, Second Wind and Campbell Scientific.

Wind Plant Design

WINData uses wind resource assessment, site topographical conditions, site and county permitting requirements, military clearance and FAA permits to layout wind turbine arrays to optimize output of a wind plant design. WINData has designed many wind plants has extensive experienced modeling wind plant output.

WINData also has extensive experience in the following areas:

  1. Utility and energy business technical understanding
  2.  Identify and spearhead development opportunities
  3. Project scoping, development strategy and bid formulation
  4. Technical team leader and project manager
  5. Wind resource assessment and meteorological science
  6. Project design and modeling
  7. Conduct meetings with land owners, communities, Utilities, stakeholders, governmental agencies and tribes
  8. Contract and agreement formulation, negotiation and execution
  9. Technical writing

Wind Project Development

WINData, LLC is a veteran engineering company that provides professional wind project development services to the wind industry. WINData wind project work comprises over 15 GW of wind farms and conceptual developments across the United States.

WINData’s pioneering work in the 1990’s and early 2000’s contributed significantly to the wind energy projects on the Blackfeet Reservation, Cut Bank, Ethridge and Judith Gap in Montana; the Columbia River Gorge in Washington and Oregon and near Casper, Wyoming

WINData provides a full range of wind energy project services from initial met program design, resource  analysis, land work, plant design and permitting to negotiation of Interconnection and Power Purchase Agreements and plant construction and commissioning. Our Principals have been integral in wind project origination since 1991 and have significant experience in every aspect of the business from initial land owner relations to negotiations with power off-takers.

The Technology

WINData’s “WINDataNOW! Technology” was developed under research support from John Deere Renewables, NaturEner and the US Department of Energy. WINDataNOW! is a 4G high-fidelity real-time met data technology leveraging OSIsoft PI for use by wind energy integrators, forecasters, developers and plant and system operators.

WINDataNOW’s core technology takes advantage of many industry standard pieces of equipment and combines them to deliver real-time meteorological data to users. Various meteorological tower configurations and instrument combinations are possible and vary by individual site characteristic and customer specifications. WINDataNOW can even add non- standard sensors as required to further characterize the wind flows of a prospective site.

While today’s site assessment technology relies on 10 minute average wind speed readings, the WINDataNOW technology records a much higher fidelity data set (usually second-by-second data). Legacy systems paint an even more incomplete picture of a site’s potential operations once that 10 minute average data is rolled into hourly, daily or monthly averages.

WINDataNOW’s technology gives users the flexibility to use their high fidelity data in any manner necessary. They can easily assess a site’s behavior and dynamics during seasonal, diurnal, or synoptic variations over long periods of time without sacrificing their source data quality.

In order to deliver higher fidelity data to customers, WINDataNOW uses quality instrumentation that can deliver a more exact representation of the wind speed information to the WINDataNOW data acquisition system. The system is able to communicate wirelessly to a central server and deliver near-real time data to customers.

Because WINDataNOW uses OSIsoft’s industry leading PI System as its data repository, most utility and operating companies can use their live met data at its full fidelity just like any other data source that feeds their on-site PI System. This enables wind experts to interact with their data in familiar tools such as Excel, or PI ProcessBook. Met data can also feed directly into forecasting provider models and can be used to support rapid refresh.
